Work from Home Tips: The New “Normal”

For many of us over the last few weeks, we spent the time adjusting to the new “normal” of working from home. We must continue to keep in mind the importance of practicing social distancing. This will be the key to keeping you and your family safe. Working from home can be challenging for those of us that either have a daily routine, have young kids to take care of, get distracted easily, or a bit of everything in between. This adjustment may be easier for some of us more than others. If you are having a hard time with the adjustment, we are here to provide you with some helpful work from home tips to get you through adjusting to the new “normal”.

Have a Morning Routine

It can be difficult finding your rhythm while working from home especially since you probably already had an established routine for who knows how long. You might be already used to hopping in the car at let’s say 7:30 am every morning to catch the 8:00 am Go Train to Union Station. When trying to get into the groove of things you might feel like it is easier to just hop out of bed and open your laptop or computer right when you wake up to start working. However, you should try to give yourself a little time in the morning for yourself whether that is a little morning yoga or making avocado and eggs for breakfast before you start your day. It could be a perfect jumpstart to your day!

Get Dressed

Sometimes when you pretend like you are going to work by getting dressed can help you be more productive. That could be a tough one especially when you do not have to get dressed in the morning to go into the office and you could stay in your pajamas all day long. When you put your mind in that mental mindset it could help you be more efficient with your work ethic throughout the day.

Designated Workspace

A designated workspace is important as it keeps that work-life balance. Try and avoid having your designated workspace in the bedroom since it is a good idea to keep the room where you sleep away from where you work. Make your workspace somewhere you want to spend your time at especially since you might be working from home for the coming weeks ahead.

Take Breaks

Make sure you take frequent breaks! If you are anything like me, you might find yourself sitting at your desk working on your laptop for hours and next thing you know it is 3:00 pm and you forgot to eat lunch. Schedule your lunch breaks to ensure that you are taking your lunch break. Similarly, to how you would at the office make sure you get up every so often to get some off-screen time and maybe grab a glass of water, coffee, or tea. If it helps you can try and set an alarm to remind yourself to take those frequent breaks throughout the day. There is no sense in getting yourself stressed out or feeling overwhelmed.

Have a Start and End Time

It can be tougher to end your workday when you are at home. It is not like the office where people start getting ready to go home at 5:00 pm. You can have your laptop on for as long as you like which can make it difficult to properly end your day. It is so important to create that work and personal life separation especially when you are working from home. Make sure you stick to a designated schedule and try to start and end at the same time every day.
